“Il mio maestro Antonino Votto, che negli anni Venti è stato un grande direttore d’orchestra alla Scala, in un periodo straordinario non solo per la presenza di Toscanini ma anche per le proposte musicali e culturali, mi ripeteva sempe una frase del suo, di maestro: “Un vero direttore d’opera è colui che ha respirato profondamente la polvere del palcoscenico”. Un direttore non solo dev’essere un uomo di cultura, conoscere bene il libretto e la natura del dramma, ma deve informare di questo i cantanti, perchè il lavoro drammaturgico e musicale lo deve fare prima il direttore e poi il regista. Tutto questo lavoro di palcoscenico oggi è finito”.
